VIPSATV Our pick

Best overall value in the UK this year

Background

What you are actually buying

An IPTV subscription is access to channels delivered over your broadband connection instead of an aerial or a dish. The provider supplies a playlist and an app; your internet does the rest.

That means the quality you get depends on two things: the provider's servers and your own line. A cheap subscription on a good line often beats an expensive one on a poor one.

Where the money goes

Price differences across this table come down to channel licensing, server capacity and how many connections you are allowed. A longer commitment is what buys the lower monthly rate here, not a thinner service.

The figure worth comparing is cost per month at renewal, divided by the number of simultaneous streams you actually need. That number reorders most published rankings, including some of ours.

How to test before committing

Take a trial where one is offered and use it at the worst possible time: a weekend evening, with the household online. That is when capacity problems show.

Then pay monthly for the first month. Only move to a longer term once you have seen it survive a busy night, because the annual saving is worthless if the service is not there in month three.

Common questions

Is IPTV legal in the UK?

Paying for a service that holds the rights to what it streams is legal. Services that resell channels they have no licence for are not, and using one carries the risk. We only list providers that present themselves as licensed, but we cannot audit their contracts, so treat the legal position as your responsibility.

What broadband speed do I need?

About 15 Mbps per HD stream and 25 Mbps for 4K. On an average UK fibre line that is comfortable for two or three simultaneous streams. If several people watch at once, count the streams rather than the people.

Why do you rank on renewal price rather than the offer price?

Because the offer price is only true once. Most services advertise a first-term rate and quietly renew higher. We record what each one charges at renewal and rank on that, which is why a cheap first term never earns a place on this page by itself.

Will it work on a Firestick?

Every service in this table does. The Firestick is the most common IPTV device in British homes and any provider that cannot run cleanly on one is not worth listing.

Can I watch on more than one TV?

Only if the plan says so. Multi-connection plans cost more up front but usually work out cheaper than two single subscriptions. Check the connection count before you buy, not after.

What happens if a service stops working?

Reputable providers refund or restore quickly. Pay monthly at first so you are not out much if it goes wrong, and only move to an annual plan once a service has proven itself over a few weeks.
